To celebrate Kazakhstan’s Republic Day on 25 October 2022, young athletes from the Children and Youth Sports School in the city of Ridder participated in the Open Athletics Championship.
The competition was held at the running tracks which were recently repaired by KAZ Minerals through a social investment project. Since then, the Children and Youth Sports Club hosted many exciting competitions, including the Open Athletics Championship. About 120 athletes participated in the competition including children from Ridder as well as guests from the Ulan and Shemonaikha districts and the village of Novaya Bukhtarma. During the day, young athletes competed for medals in the 200, 400 and 800 metres distance races and a team relay.
“I’ve been doing athletics for a year already. I train in this facility, and I really like the running tracks here. The competition today was so exciting that time flew by quickly for me. I got first place in the 200 and 400 metre distances,” said Anastasiya Biryukova, 11-year-old student at Ridder Lyceum School № 1.
Nearly 1,100 children attend the Children and Youth Sports School in Ridder. The school trains future champions in 20 sporting disciplines. 460 of the students trainon the running tracks.
“Students run around the training area and train in the facility. Fortunately, we have good running tracks with turns. Previously, we used conveyor rubber from the factory. For many years we were moved from one school to another and had no other choice but to take the rubber with us. Our new running track is an incredibly good acquisition for the Ridder school, as the rubber cover is very important for a track and field athlete. The opportunity to run in circles with turns is also very important for athletes. It is significantly better than running straight from one wall to another,” said coach Tatyana Vasilyeva. She added that such competitions promote sports and a healthy lifestyle and draws attention to track and field athletics.
