The Group is committed to the protection of biodiversity in the areas which may be affected by its operations and avoids operating in areas with high biodiversity value.
The Group undertakes environmental monitoring on an ongoing basis to protect biodiversity in the areas close to its production facilities. As part of the monitoring program, regular sampling is carried out by accredited laboratories and checked by regulatory authorities.
The Group is investing in increasing biodiversity close to its sites. In 2019, over 700 trees, plants and bushes have been planted in the vicinity of the Bozshakol mine covering a total area of over 4,000 square metres. In Aktogay over 1,500 trees, plants and bushes have been planted covering a total area of around 5,000 square metres. In order to protect soil cover, measures are also being undertaken to strengthen slopes that may be subject to erosion.
In 2019 an annual biodiversity photography competition was launched, to encourage employees to record and recognise the value of plant and animal life on or close to KAZ Minerals' sites. Some of the competition entries are shown below.
