Our goal is to make safety a way of life for every person involved in KAZ Minerals’ activities. We aim to create a culture of safety that is deeply rooted in all aspects of KAZ Minerals.
In 2019, KAZ Minerals launched its Goal Zero initiative to demonstrate the Group’s commitment to the safety of its employees and the environment in which we work. In the time since then, the benefits arising from this commitment have been reflected in our safety performance. Compared with 2019, in 2022 the number of TRI reduced from 63 to 47, which included a sharp drop in the number of Lost Time Injuries from 44 to 33. In 2021 and 2022, the Group operated without a fatality.
During 2022, the Group chose to build on the success of the Goal Zero initiative and introduced Living Goal Zero. Root cause analysis of safety incidents indicates that behavioural factors are significant, and as a result KAZ Minerals developed a refreshed campaign to encourage employees and contractors to view good safety practices as a way of life, not just a way of working. To help embed a strong safety culture more deeply in the Group’s workforce, and reach the goal of zero incidents, the Group’s safety and health department developed an information campaign which highlighted 11 strong safety behaviours to be followed both at work and beyond.
During the year, the Group has reiterated the high safety standards required of both employees and contractors. These include thorough safety briefings and training, involvement in the Goal Zero initiative, risk assessment and management, the SLAM (‘Stop, Look, Assess, Manage’) technique and other safety procedures. Clauses to this effect are non-negotiable and are included in every agreement with contractors, so that everyone associated with KAZ Minerals is accountable for upholding our safety standards.
