KAZ Minerals supports a wide range of social investment projects in the areas surrounding our operations, including those which target improved access to healthcare. Throughout the years the Group implemented a range of projects in this sector at both a national and local level. As most of the Group’s operations are located in rural environments, support for local communities is at the forefront of our social engagement.
In rural settings globally, residents may struggle to get access to healthcare in their villages and towns, and existing medical centres may be underequipped and understaffed. In the event that urgent and complex medical assistance is required, it may still be necessary to travel to the nearest city. In the settlements near to the Aktogay site, the Group has funded local government-run hospitals and medical centres, which provide free healthcare to local residents by partnering with local health trusts, charities, hospitals and regional authorities. In recent years the Group has funded the purchase of vital equipment for hospitals in the villages of Aktogay and Ayagoz and implemented works to improve infrastructure. Through these projects, the Group is working towards UN SDG 3, regarding the promotion of good health and well-being.
In July 2022 the Group donated two ambulance vehicles to medical clinics in the villages of Aktogay and Kopa. The Aktogay medical clinic serves over 7,000 patients, while around 1,000 people use the clinic in Kopa. There is no doctor in the Kopa clinic, only nurses, so patients often need to travel to Aktogay if supervision by a doctor is required. The model of the ambulances provided to the medical clinics was chosen due to their specifications which enable them to drive to remote areas of the region with rough terrain.
Asset Abyzov, Director of Government Relations of KAZ Minerals Aktogay presented the ambulance vehicles to representatives of the medical facilities. The event was attended by the heads of local authorities, members of the council of elders and medical staff.
“We have long waited for an ambulance. I am sure that it will serve us for a long time and save many lives,” said Merey Nurseytova, acting chief doctor at Aktogay ambulatory clinic.
“We are very grateful to KAZ Minerals for providing a much-needed ambulance for us. It will significantly facilitate the work of our doctors. For several years already we have experienced difficulties in providing emergency medical service due to lack of ambulances. It was extremely hard during the pandemic” Nurlan Zhetibayev, head of the Kopa rural district, said.
