The closure plan for the Yubileyno-Snegirikhinsky mine has now been fully executed by the Group and the Kazakhstan Regional Environmental Commission approved the closure of the mine at the end of October 2019. KAZ Minerals is committed to rehabilitating its mining sites after closure, as is required by law in Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan. The Group periodically reviews and updates closure plans for each of its sites, including calculating and providing for the likely costs associated with closure.
In December 2016, mining operations at Yubileyno-Snegirikhinsky ceased as mineral resources at the mine were fully exploited. A closure plan was designed and agreed with the local authorities. Under the rehabilitation programme, the majority of surface buildings such as accommodation blocks, offices, and associated utilities were transferred to the local government authorities to be re-purposed for use by small and medium sized businesses.
Structures specific to mining activities such as containers, underground equipment, the explosives warehouse and ore stockpile were demolished and removed from the site. The underground mine has been sealed and allowed to flood, which is a natural process due to groundwater inflow.

Yubileyno-Snegirikhinsky reforestation
The overall strategy for the rest of the site is forestry reclamation, to restore the landscape to its original condition. To achieve the reforestation, the original open pit was backfilled with material from the waste dumps and the waste dumps were profiled to fit into the surrounding topography. The surface was then covered with an impermeable geomembrane and layers of clay and topsoil to allow the planting of new vegetation. Natural reforestation will now take place over the next 3 - 4 years as the newly planted trees grow, which will help to prevent future soil erosion from water runoff from the former waste dumps. The Group will continue to monitor the site throughout the reforestation phase.
