Focused on copper
KAZ Minerals is a leading copper producer in Kazakhstan. We also produce and sell significant quantities of zinc, gold and silver by-products.
In 2016, total copper cathode equivalent output was 140 kt. The Group's assets also produced 75 kt of zinc in concentrate, 3,103 koz of silver bar equivalent and 120 koz of gold bar equivalent in 2016.
We crush the ore in several stages and process the ore into copper and zinc concentrates at our concentrators. The copper concentrate from the East Region and Bozymchak is transported to the Balkhash smelter for processing. The Balkhash smelter is owned and operated by Cuprum Holding and KAZ Minerals has long term agreements with Cuprum Holding for the provision of smelting services. Copper concentrate from Bozshakol and Aktogay is sold to smelters in China. In 2015, we began a scoping study to evaluate the possibility of smelting in Kazakhstan.
